Questions we are asked, and our standard answers
Is Indonesian domestic LCL the same as courier?
No. Courier parcels move by kilogram across air and road networks — small shipments, fast, expensive. Inter-island less-than-container cargo moves mainly as domestic container consolidation: several shippers share one box on a domestic liner service, charged per CBM or per kilogram, far cheaper but counted in days. They are two separate systems and their rates cannot be converted into each other.
Which port should Java-to-outer-island cargo sail from?
Sumatra sails from Jakarta (Tanjung Priok); everything else sails from Surabaya (Tanjung Perak). Semarang (Tanjung Emas) is a feeder port rather than a mainline origin, so Central Java cargo is normally trucked to Surabaya or Jakarta to sail. Cargo moving between two points on Java is a road move and does not use domestic containers.
How long does it take?
It depends on region and direction (door-to-door, smooth connections, excluding waiting for the next sailing): Sumatra 5–10 days, Kalimantan 7–12 days, Sulawesi outbound 4–7 days, Bali and NTB/NTT 5–12 days, Maluku 12–18 days, Papua 15–25 days. Backhaul is generally longer than outbound — Sulawesi backhaul is observed at 10–19 days with high variance — and backhaul figures for other regions are estimates to be confirmed with the carrier.
LCL or FCL — how do I choose?
The break-even on Indonesian domestic lanes sits well below the 12–15 CBM typical of international lanes, but the actual number has to be calculated on the live quote and no fixed threshold should be applied. As a rule of thumb: 1–10 CBM is usually cheaper as LCL, 10–15 CBM should be quoted both ways, above 15 CBM ask for a 20GP as well; heavy cargo (ten-plus tonnes) deserves both quotes even when the volume is small.
Does the quote include delivery at destination?
Not necessarily, and it is the item most often added later. Your enquiry must require destination delivery as a separate line and state whether the service is door-to-door or port-to-port / port-to-door. A quote that does not break it out will very likely be topped up once the cargo lands.
What is the one thing to watch on the Denpasar direction?
