Two routes, and neither substitutes for the other
A common and expensive mistake is to treat halal as part of the product registration, or registration as part of the halal process.
- Distribution registration — decides whether the product may be sold to consumers at all, and under what presentation.
- Halal route — concerns the claim made on the package, the facility it came from and how that facility is verified.
- A product can hold one and not the other, which means it may be imported but not distributed, or distributed but not labelled halal.
- Both are held in the name of an Indonesian entity, not the overseas manufacturer, which is why the importer or its appointed representative matters so much.
What the registration route actually reviews
- The product identity and composition, including additives and any ingredient with its own restriction.
- The label as it will appear in the market — claims, nutrition information, allergen statements and language.
- The manufacturing facility and the quality system behind it, evidenced by documents from the country of origin.
- The shelf life and storage conditions, because these decide whether the label as designed can be defended.
- Registration attaches to a specific product, pack size and manufacturer. A new flavour or a smaller pack is not the same approval.
Practical point Line up the label artwork before starting the route. Labels are the single most common reason a food registration is sent back for correction.
Where the halal question really bites
Halal is not a single certificate you either have or lack; it is a chain that has to stay intact from facility to package.

Sequencing that avoids a stranded container
- Settle the product registration route before booking production, because the route can change the label.
- Confirm the halal position at the same time, since a label decision depends on both.
- Only then freeze the artwork, print the packaging and ship. Printing first is the classic way to pay twice.
- Keep the origin documents with the shipment file, so a query at arrival can be answered from the same folder.

Rule of thumb If the approval is not in the name of the party importing, expect a question. Aligning the two names early is cheaper than re-doing the route later.
