The remaining-shelf-life principle
Indonesian practice expects imported food to arrive with sufficient remaining shelf life to be distributed and sold — the specific threshold depends on the product’s total shelf life and the rules in force, so we do not invent a percentage here.
- What this means operationally: production date and total shelf life belong in the booking conversation, not just on the box.
- A product with 12 months total life has no slack: by the time it clears a 9–14 day sea transit plus clearance plus distribution, every week of factory delay is a week of your sellable window.
- Sea is usually still right for shelf-stable goods; the planning variable is production timing, not transport mode.
Indonesian labelling for food
Labels are a legal surface, and food labels carry the most of any category on this lane.
- Ingredient list, additives and allergens in Indonesian; net weight; production and expiry dates.
- Importer or registration-holder identity on the label — which must match the registration, which is why artwork and registration are one project.
- Special categories (health supplements, baby food, alcohol-adjacent products) carry additional rules — classify honestly at the start.
Transport and handling behavior
Most China–Indonesia food cargo is shelf-stable and moves by sea, but the category has its own physical quirks.
- Temperature-sensitive items (chocolate, certain confectionery) cross the equator — reefer or insulated packing in hot months; air with temperature consideration for the worst cases.
- Liquid cargo — bottles and cans are heavy-dense; payload limits bind before cube.
- Powders and grains — moisture protection and pest-free packaging are quarantine-relevant.
- Perishables are a different game entirely (reefer, faster transit, tighter documents) — scope them separately.
Cost and time: a worked example
